Like Marie, Loberti is sightless, but that shared experience only lays the groundwork for a magnificently present performance that draws out the intelligence and tenacity of a character who might otherwise have been reduced to a pitiable damsel in distress. Aria Mia Loberti and Mark Ruffalo in All the Light We Cannot See Timea Saghy-NetflixĪt least All the Light’s creators made one inspired decision, in casting Aria Mia Loberti, a newcomer with no formal training in acting, as heroine Marie-Laure LeBlanc. Knight’s script is particularly flimsy, shallowly skimming each character’s surface and failing to meaningfully address the big moral questions that come with depicting a Nazi combatant as a good person. Not that these red flags alone can account for how many disastrous choices went into the making of this maudlin show. Another is that, unlike so many powerful authors who’ve helped shepherd their novels to the screen, Doerr is not among the series’ producers. One clue that screenwriter Steven Knight ( Peaky Blinders, See) and director Shawn Levy ( Stranger Things, Free Guy) have done wrong by Doerr’s story, of a blind French girl and a brilliant orphan turned reluctant German soldier in bombed-out Brittany during the final months of World War II, is that they’ve whittled down the 544-page doorstop to a skeletal four episodes. 2, isn’t just inferior to the book it’s a schmaltzy, incompetent, borderline offensive mess whose mere existence tarnishes the book’s legacy. That series, which arrives on the streamer on Nov. All the Light became a cultural phenomenon, selling more than 15 million copies worldwide by the time Netflix greenlighted a TV adaptation in 2021. The New York Times called the novel “ hauntingly beautiful” and named it one of the 10 best books of 2014. Barack Obama made time to devour-and recommend-it while he was still in the White House. It won a Pulitzer Prize and was shortlisted for a National Book Award. For a more convincing Second World War saga, you’d be better off with an episode of ’Allo ’Allo.Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See might be the most widely acclaimed book of the past decade. This series looks lavish, all CGI set pieces and painterly compositions, but it’s style over substance. He has duly reduced a lyrical novel into a Ladybird view of history, drenched in a sickly soundtrack. Levy is best known for family-friendly blockbusters such as Night at the Museum. Knight’s script is overly wordy yet emotionally under-powered. Everyone spouts exposition and speaks their motivations aloud. The narrative moves with the urgency of a barrage balloon, bouncing around in time whenever it’s in danger of gathering momentum. Ruffalo’s mangled sing-song accent wanders randomly across the continent, often within the same sentence. Villains are all cartoonishly evil: morphine-addicted monsters, sneering sadists, greedy gem-hunters. Heroes are all saintly: the disabled beauty, the noble orphan, the charismatic freedom fighter. The result is preachy, sanitised and sentimental.Ĭharacters who were delicately nuanced on the page are drawn in rudimentary strokes on screen. Writer Steven Knight and director Shawn Levy have clumsily scissored the source material to make it less dark and more optimistic. It’s epic, it’s sweeping, it’s other adjectives that get applied to period productions. Meanwhile, Werner falls in love with her voice, risking his life to protect someone he’s never seen. As bombs fall and the townsfolk starve, they fight to keep Marie’s location secret. Instead, her transmissions are intercepted by teenage German soldier Werner Pfennig (Louis Hofmann), an electronics genius reluctantly enlisted by the Nazis to track down resistance signallers. She illegally broadcasts over the radio each night, hoping that her coded messages will reunite her with her missing father (Mark Ruffalo) and uncle (a whiskered but wasted Hugh Laurie). All the Light We Cannot See (on Netflix now) somehow ends up a flat, flavourless Euro-pudding.īased on Anthony Doerr’s bestseller, this trite and turgid four-parter follows Marie-Laure LeBlanc (luminous debutant Aria Mia Loberti), a blind girl in Nazi-occupied France. The ingredients are all there but the recipe fails to rise. An Oscar-nominated director blessed with an A-list cast and a whopping budget. A Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, adapted by a decorated screenwriter.

To repeat, I found Lita Epstein’s book, Bookkeeping for Dummies to be a useful refresher to the field of bookkeeping in the United States.Īccurate and complete bookkeeping is crucial to any business owner, but it’s also important to those who work with the business, such as investors, financial institutions, and employees. I thought the book could have maybe used some more practice problems. The last section is on managing cash in bookkeeping and the most important accounts in bookkeeping. The fifth section is on how to report bookkeeping results and how to start the bookkeeping cycle over again. The fourth section is about how to close the books at the end of the month or at the end of the year. The third section is on how to manage day-to-day bookkeeping. The book has a section on bookkeeping both without a computer program and with a computer program. The second section is a section on ledgers and journals. The first section is an introduction to bookkeeping. As someone who has an associate degree in accounting, I thought Lita Epstein’s book, Bookkeeping for Dummies was a useful refresher to the field of bookkeeping. I read the book on the Kindle.I read the second edition. The Business Writer Lita Epstein published the American version of Bookkeeping for Dummies in 2015. It's really easy to read and everything is explained very clearly. It goes further than just covering the basics and it's the perfect book for anyone interested in bookkeeping, anyone that is going to take over the bookkeeping tasks in an office, or just simply someone that wants to refresh their skills or have it as a reference. It covers bookkeeping from the basics, covering a little bit of software and it does not assume you have some prior knowledge of bookkeeping or accountancy. Once you get over the fact that the book is destined to an American public and make a bit of "translation" the book is simply terrific. And even that part might be interesting from an Irish or UK point of view. Only the part dedicated to payroll and taxes was exclusively American, that might be about 20% or less of the book. As a person living in Ireland I found that most of the book was easily translated to bookkeeping in Ireland or the UK. The book is the American version, and it covers bookkeeping from the American point of view. Riders reached the 310 foot peak in a little over 20 seconds, climbing the 45 degree lift at 13.5 miles per hour. A cable was wound on a giant drum much quicker than a chain could be ran, plus the lift hill angle was able to be steepened to take up less room. Intamin came up with the more creative solution: the cable lift. The speed and space required was still an issue however. It would significantly impact the capacity of the ride.” Morgan’s solution to the problem was the same system they ended up using on their record breaking coaster, Steel Dragon 2000: two chains as opposed to one monstrous one. Hildebrant explained “adding another 105 feet to the lift will would mean a longer ride up. The 205 foot tall Magnum XL-200 uses a traditional chain lift and takes 90 seconds to get to the top. A 300 foot hill would take up a large amount of real estate. Perhaps the biggest challenge to solve was the lift hill. In contrast, on the podcast Morgan did say they knew they had to make the wheels bigger and scale other components up, such as the diameter of the rails. Sandor Kernacs of Intamin, along with the help of Monty Jasper, VP of Construction and Maintenance for Cedar Fair, were able to solve the issues. One of the limiting factors of building bigger and faster roller coasters is the design of the wheels. In Tim O’Brien’s book Roller Coaster King of Cedar Point Amusement Park, Dick Kinzel said Morgan engineers were not able to solve two problems: “how to get the cars to the top of the 300 foot summit quickly and how to come up with a more durable material for the wheels”. Of course, Morgan probably didn’t want to admit the other reason why Intamin was ultimately chosen: technology. Morgan negatively described Intamin’s design as having “way too much energy coming into the station and just put a bunch of brakes to scrub it off.” “It was basically a done deal,” according to Dana Morgan on The Season Pass Podcast Episode #389, until Intamin came in with a lower bid by several million dollars (and a shorter ride). Cedar Fair had already worked successfully with Morgan on three hyper coasters: Wild Thing at Valleyfair, Steel Force at Dorney Park, and Mamba at Worlds of Fun. Morgan was the first to bid on the 300 foot coaster for Cedar Point. While Intamin would only do one additional giga coaster for Cedar Fair, Intimidator 305 at Kings Dominion in 2010, B&M would eventually go on to produce three giga coasters for Cedar Fair: Leviathan at Canada’s Wonderland in 2012, Fury 325 at Carowinds in 2015, and Orion at Kings Island in 2020.ĭ.H. And “they were committed to several new coaster projects that would make it impossible for them to do the project within our timeline.” B&M opened six new roller coasters in the year 2000. There were two coaster companies competing for the project.Īccording to Hildebrandt, “B&M was not considered because their expertise (at the time) was restricted to inversion coasters.” Maybe unknown then but B&M were developing their first non-inverting hyper coasters, Apollo’s Chariot and Raging Bull, that would open in 1999. “What Dick (Kinzel) wanted was a ride that would surpass Magnum but would carry the same genetic code: steel structure, tubular steel track, no inversions, high capacity, world class stats: highest, steepest, fastest.” A location was identified on the bay side of the park though some “feared cramming a huge coaster in this space would kill the ambiance of the Frontier Trail, though the ambiance had been in decline for decades.” John Hildebrandt tells the story in his memoir, Always Cedar Point. The rumors started flying as to if the new coaster would be a B&M product like Raptor and Mantis or another Arrow ride like Magnum and Gemini.Ī new coaster was pitched to the board of directors in Cleveland in November of 1998. Cedar Point wanted to maintain their status as the best coaster park in the world. The last major coaster built on the peninsula was Mantis in 1996. In the late 1990’s, speculation ran high as to what the next big thing coming to Cedar Point would be.
